We all asked at least once who is the richest man in the world? Well that will be Carlos Slim Helu. One of the wealthiest people in the world, was born on January 28, 1940, in Mexico City to a family of Lebanese Christian immigrants. In 1966, when he was only 25 years old he started building what was to become one of his flagship companies, Grupo Carso. Carso was derived from the start of his name and that of his wife, Soumaya Domit Gemayel, whom he also married later that year. He would buy businesses that was under-performing and turn them into more profitable enterprises. This is a strategy he learned from his dad - buying when there is blood in the streets (which his farther learned during the early 20th century Mexican revolution). He became a billionaire after the economic crash of 1982 when he purchased investments at low prices that would later be extremely valuable. "It's not a question of arriving and putting in a whole new administration, but instead, arriving and "compacting" things as much as possible, reducing management layers. We want as few management layers as possible, so that executives are very close to the operations. We also don't believe in having big corporate infrastructures." Carlos Slim Helu.
His philanthropic contributions has increased dramatically since the 90's and he heads up the Latin America Development Fund. This fund invests in the things he believes will make a difference Latin America - infrastructure, health, education and employment.
The world richest man, a noted art collector and philanthropist, founded (1994) a not-for-profit art museum, Museo Soumaya (named for his wife), in Mexico City. The new anvil-shaped structure (designed by Fernando Romero, Slim's son-in-law) featured a facade covered in aluminum hexagons, and the interior offered 183,000 square feet (17,000 square metres) of exhibition space. Slim was also prominent in the revitalization of the historic centre of Mexico City, establishing (2000) the Foundation for the Historic Centre of Mexico City, and he received the HadrianAward from the World Monuments Fund in 2004 for his efforts in preserving culturally significant buildings in Mexico City. Slim also received several awards for his philanthropic efforts, which included establishment of the Carlos Slim Foundation, focusing on the areas of health, sports, and education through such organizations as the Carlos Slim Institute of Health, which funds research projects on public health in Mexico.
In 2008, Slim surprised the business world with his purchase of a 6,4 percent stake in the troubled New Yourk Times Company. The following year, as a global recession and declining advertising revenues took a particularly heavy toll on print-based "old media" companies, Slim made The Times a loan of $250 million.
Well, who is the richest man in the world? No need to say again!
